President Lee, calling for assistance in ratifying the free trade deal, explained that the Korea-U.S. FTA not only benefits both countries economically, but will also play a considerable role in the Korea-U.S. alliance. As well, it will influence other strategic aspects of the East Asian region, according to Kim Eun-hye, deputy spokesperson of Cheong Wa Dae.
Ron Kirk reportedly replied that he is aware of the big opportunities that can be brought on by the Korea-U.S. FTA, as well as its symbolic influence over the East Asia region. He said that he would strongly push ahead for its ratification, explaining to fellow Americans how the deal can help overcome the economic crisis and create new jobs.
Kirk also said that U.S. President Barack Obama is determined to do what he said he would do, and that although there may be other pending issues, the Korea-U.S. FTA holds the most significance. He stressed once again that progress will be made.
Meanwhile, Lee and Kirk also touched on the similarity of their careers, both having served as mayors in the past. Lee is a former mayor of Seoul and Kirk the former mayor of Dallas, Texas.
Welcoming President Lee''s state visit to Washington, Kirk said that he''s learning a lot from Lee''s past success as mayor of the capital city of Korea. President Lee for this part said that he, too, is aware of the stories of unprecedented economic development and growth in Dallas during Kirk''s term there. Lee pointed out that just like Kirk managed to invigorate the economy of Texas through NAFTA, he foresees a similar role for the Korea-U.S. FTA in helping with the economic recovery of the United States.
