Lee holds bilateral talks with Russian, Australian and UN leaders

The President held talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard in a series of bilateral meetings.


The President held talks with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on November 10, where he expressed his hopes for greater ties between the G20 development campaign and the UN Millennium Development Goals. 

 


The President also asked the Secretary-General to play a leading role in discussing the development agenda at the G20 Seoul Summit.


In response, Ban expressed his support for greater UN cooperation with the G20 and South Korea on international issues in the future.


The President also emphasized issues such as balanced development among global economies and fighting climate change, which he hopes will receive greater international attention through the G20 Summit.


The President and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed to extend economic and scientific cooperation during their summit talks on Nov. 10. They further agreed to bolster corporate collaboration in the development of oil and mineral resources in Russia.

 


After the bilateral talks, they attended a signing ceremony on an agreement to boost economic and cultural ties and extend resident worker visas.


The two leaders also agreed on efforts to develop harbor facilities in the Russian Far East, step up cooperation to preserve marine life, launch the KSLV-I rocket and continue the exchange of military and agricultural technologies.


The President and Medvedev reconfirmed that all participants of the six-party talks must work together to successfully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, and that Russia and South Korea will closely collaborate to bring the talks to a successful conclusion.


The two leaders also agreed on joint efforts to improve the governance of international financial institutions, financial regulations, anti-protectionism measures and development aid at the G20 Seoul Summit.


Later on Wednesday, The President held summit talks with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, during which they agreed to make joint efforts to speed up ongoing negotiations for a bilateral free trade pact.

 


The President and Gillard exchanged views on cooperation and methods for success at the G20 summit, improving bilateral ties and collaboration on regional and international issues.
