President Lee holds summit talks with leaders of China, Brazil

The President held summit talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao on November 11 at Cheong Wa Dae to exchange opinions on various issues of mutual interest, including Seoul-Beijing ties, the G20 Seoul Summit and political issues on the Korean Peninsula.


The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the advancement in Korea-China ties of "strategic cooperative partnership" and agreed to further progress in bilateral relations in the economic and trade sectors.


The President asked President Hu for Beijing’s active support for the G20 Seoul Summit. The Chinese leader, in return, agreed to actively cooperate with Seoul for the success of the international gathering.


The two leaders exchanged opinions on issues of mutual interest and agreed to maintain close communication and cooperation for the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and denuclearization of North Korea.

Later that day, The President met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at Cheong Wa Dae. They discussed ways to ensure the success of the G20 Seoul Summit and measures to substantially expand bilateral cooperation in a variety of sectors, including trade and investment.


Brazil is Korea''s largest South American trading partner and largest investment destination, and many Korean firms are involved in large-scaled projects in automobile or steel sectors there.


President Lula said that he hopes the two countries can strengthen cooperation in the science technology sectors, while expressing his satisfaction with development in Korea-Brazil ties.


The President asked for the Brazilian government’s active support for Korean enterprises working on projects in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Summer Olympic Games 2016. Lula, in return, said he welcomes the active participation of Korean companies in Brazil’s infrastructure construction projects, such as a high-speed railway.


Meanwhile, the President also met with Brazilian President-elect Dilma Vana Rousseff, who accompanied Lula. Rousseff won the presidential election last month and will take office in January of 2011 as Brazil’s first female leader.
