The President will participate in a United Nations meeting on climate change in New York on the 22nd, co-hosting the session with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. At the meeting he plans to promote Korea''s efforts to counter global climate change and realize low-carbon green growth.

At the 64th UN General Assembly on the 23rd, the President will give a keynote speech on the vision and policy of “Global Korea” that would add to the peace and prosperity of the world.

In this session, President Lee plans to elucidate Korea''s own efforts and principles to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis and strengthen ties with its allies.

The following day, President Lee will then take part in the third G20 Summit in Pittsburg to stress the importance of a well-timed exit strategy to end economic stimulus packages that have been put in place to overcome the global financial crisis.

President Lee already made a point on the exit strategy in his contribution to the Pittsburgh G20 Information Center “Pittsburgh: Bridging the Washington-London G20 Summits and Beyond.”

“I believe there are still substantial downside risks in the global economy” the president wrote and explained that an exit strategy and needs to be “well sequenced” for the coming months. He warned that the global community should be more wary about the possibility of falling back into a double-dip recession as a consequence of premature withdrawal from the effective policy measures taken so far. He then added that he would like to see the G20 leaders agree on the general principles of the implementation of exit strategies and leave the timing to individual countries.

Also at the G20 summit, the President plans to urge the nations to come together to prevent trade protectionism and finalize the conclusion of the Doha Development Agenda. He will further call for a growth model of the future with due consideration to the situation of developing nations.

On the sidelines Lee will also meet with UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon and exchange opinions on various topics, including climate change and the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula. Lee will also meet with Korean officials in the UN to offer words of encouragement. He will attend dinner parties co-hosted by the New York-based Korea Society, Asia Society and Council on Foreign Relations to deliver speeches regarding Korea-U.S. alliance and inter-Korean issues.

President Lee is scheduled to return home on 26th.
