President Lee to visit Vietnam for ASEAN+3, EAS

The President will visit Vietnam on October 28 to attend the ASEAN+3 Summit and East Asian Summit (EAS) meetings, Cheong Wa Dae said on Oct. 24.


The President will attend the Korea-ASEAN Summit and the ASEAN+3 summit meeting after arriving in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Oct. 28, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation with ASEAN member countries and to strengthen regional cooperation among East Asian countries.


The president will talk with leaders from Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore about cooperation measures to ensure the success of the next month’s G20 Seoul Summit.


The President is proposing to upgrade the bilateral relations between Korea and the ASEAN Summit to the level of “strategic partnership” and ask ASEAN members to adopt a joint declaration and action plan backing his proposal.


He will also propose measures to advance development cooperation with emerging economies like Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.


At the ASEAN+3 Summit, the President will discuss ways to implement financial cooperation projects, including the Chiang Mai Initiative Multi-lateralization, a currency swap contract which would include all ASEAN+3 members.

At the EAS, the President will exchange opinions with other leaders on various global issues, including climate change, financial cooperation and disaster management, and regional security issues involving the Korean Peninsula.


Now in its fifth year, the East Asian Summit will welcome the United States and Russia as members, and adopt the "Hanoi Declaration" for development of the EAS.


The President will also hold summit talks with China and Japan to discuss the implementation of the result of the third Trilateral Summit, which was held in May of this year, and discuss cooperation for the upcoming G20 Seoul Summit, along with regional issues affecting nations in East Asia.


The President will hold a series of summit talks with leaders of ASEAN member countries, including Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, to discuss substantial cooperation measures in a wide range of sectors, including the economy.
